No matter where you get them or what type you buy, new cabinets are expensive. Even if you choose options at the lower end of the price range, the cost will still add up. At Cabinet Outlet, we provide quality discount cabinets for your kitchen, bathroom, or anywhere else in your home.
When you shop for cabinets, you’ll find that they aren’t all made from the same material. Here’s your guide to cabinet materials and selecting what’s best for your home.
Solid Wood
If you’re looking for durability from your cabinets, you can’t beat solid wood. It will last for a long time and is relatively easy to sand down and refinish if you need to repair your cabinets. The wood grain also gives you a natural look that you won’t get from other materials. It is, however, the most expensive option out there. Because of the high cost, cabinet makers often only use it for the doors, turning to less expensive materials for the rest of the cabinet. But if completely solid wood cabinets are in your budget, it is the best option where quality is concerned.
Plywood
Plywood is a middle-of-the-road option that is still durable but not as expensive as solid wood. It is made of thin layers of wood that are glued together. The result is a sturdy material that is relatively affordable. There are multiple grades of plywood—each less expensive than the last—but for a surface that is easy to paint the highest grade, AA, is the best choice. Plywood is also easy to screw into because it is made of actual wood.
MDF and Particleboard
Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and particle board are similar materials. MDF is wood fibers that are glued and pressed together, and particle board is compressed woodchips. While they are the most affordable options, they do have their drawbacks. They are susceptible to damage and don’t take screws or fasteners easily. On the other hand, MDF is grainless and you can easily paint (or repaint) it after you seal the surface.
